ARTIST STATEMENT

"Something Beyond Ourselves" is my most recent series of paintings which
continue to investigate the infinite mysteries that lie within the
misleading familiarity of our own bodies. Using the abstracted motif of the
cell these paintings attempt to go 'inside' the body in order to reveal that
which is both of the body and 'beyond' the body. The infinite essence of the
human being is here reduced to a microscopic cell, magnified to expose the
macroscopic universe within it. Within these seemingly fluid cellular pools
symbols of fertility swim within colours that suggest decay and ultimately
our very mortality. Regeneration and deterioration are at work within us at
all times despite our concealing layers of skin which are here replaced by
transparent blue membranes that reveal secret perspectives of life and
death.
